Godthrone’s Lore

Godthrone Continent

A mythical landmass blessed by the gods:
The Godthrone Continent is a massive landmass, completely detached from the rest of the world, governed by bizarre rules and unique physics. Each region within the continent is distinct, with no two areas alike. The connection between the planes can best be described as a giant wheel, with the Material Plane resting at its center. As one ventures further from the center, they encounter planes that embody the fundamental aspects of the physical world.

Shadowfell

Lore of Shadowfell

Void of All Color, Littered with Death

The Shadowfell is a realm of desolation and despair, a dark and distorted reflection of the Material Plane. It is a land where all color fades into muted shades of gray, and the very air seems heavy with the weight of sorrow. Death lingers in every shadow, and life struggles to persist amidst the bleak and oppressive landscape.

The Dying Reflection

The Shadowfell mirrors the geography of the Material Plane, but its features are twisted and decayed. Where the Material Plane boasts vibrant forests, the Shadowfell offers withered, skeletal trees. Rolling hills become jagged wastelands, and rivers flow sluggishly with blackened water. Even the sky offers no reprieve, shrouded in perpetual twilight with no sun or stars to guide the way.

Life here is a pale imitation of its counterpart. Plants grow brittle and sickly, while animals, if they exist at all, appear gaunt and ghostly, their movements sluggish and unnatural.

The Weight of Despair

The very nature of the Shadowfell exerts a psychological toll on those who enter it. Joy and hope are sapped from the hearts of travelers, replaced by a creeping sense of dread and futility. Time seems to stretch endlessly, and the will to press onward can feel like a herculean task.

This oppressive atmosphere is not incidental; it is intrinsic to the plane itself. The Shadowfell amplifies negative emotions, feeding on fear, sorrow, and despair. It is said that those who linger too long in this realm risk losing themselves entirely, their souls becoming one with the shadows.

A Realm of Death

Death is omnipresent in the Shadowfell, and the line between the living and the dead is razor-thin. The plane is littered with the remnants of forgotten civilizations—ruins cloaked in silence, tombs undisturbed for millennia, and battlefields where the echoes of ancient wars still linger.

The Shadowfell is also a haven for the undead. Ghosts, wraiths, and other spectral entities roam its desolate plains, drawn to its bleak energy. Necromancers often seek out the Shadowfell to tap into its deathly power, though few return unscathed by its corruption.

Rulers of the Dark

Dominating the Shadowfell are the enigmatic entities known as the Dark Powers and their emissaries, the enigmatic Raven Queen and other shadowy lords. These beings embody the essence of death, decay, and darkness, ruling over their fragmented domains with cold indifference.

The Raven Queen, in particular, is a figure of mystery and reverence. Residing in the shadowed fortress of Letherna, she is said to oversee the passage of souls from life to death. Those who attempt to defy death or disrupt the natural cycle of the afterlife often incur her wrath.

Portals to Peril

The Shadowfell is separated from the Material Plane by thin veils, and these barriers occasionally tear, creating shadow crossings. Such portals often appear in places of great tragedy, death, or sorrow—graveyards, battlefields, and sites of mass suffering. Those who unwittingly stumble through these rifts often find themselves lost in the Shadowfell, with little hope of escape.

The Shadow's Call

Despite its bleakness, the Shadowfell holds a strange allure for those seeking forbidden knowledge or power. Hidden within its darkness are ancient secrets, artifacts, and magic tied to death and shadow. However, these treasures come at a steep price, and few are willing to pay the toll demanded by the plane’s corrupting influence.

The Endless Gloom

To walk in the Shadowfell is to tread a path between life and death, where every shadow hides a whisper of despair and every breath is a struggle against the weight of the plane's oppressive gloom. It is not a place meant for the living, but for those who dare to enter, the Shadowfell offers a stark reminder of life’s fragility and the inevitability of death.

In this void of color and desolation, the Shadowfell stands as a grim counterbalance to the vibrancy of the Material Plane, a testament to the inescapable shadow that looms over all existence.
